This week President Barack Obama made his farewell address to a packed house in Chicago. During a time when many are feeling a foreboding sense of uncertainty, his closing statement bears repeating: “I am asking you to hold fast to that faith written into our founding documents; that idea whispered by slaves and abolitionists; that spirit sung by immigrants and homesteaders and those who marched for justice; that creed reaffirmed by those who planted flags from foreign battlefields to the surface of the moon; a creed at the core of every American whose story is not yet written: Yes, we can.” Thank you. I needed that.

Wikipedia calls Gill Scott-Heron a soul and jazz poet. He called himself a “bluesologist”. No matter how you classify it, his spoken-word style is a cornerstone in the house of hip-hop, and his socially and politically focused lyrics are as relevant today as they were the day he wrote them. Ace Records has a 51 song compilation called The Revolution Begins: The Flying Dutchman Masters. Here’s a cut from that album: Pieces of a Man.
